Thanks, Martha. When I was writing Book of Mercy, the idea of creating your own library seemed so foreign to me. But in actuality, there are libraries everywhere, in all sizes, with and without rules. I find that idea delightful. Although you may not be able to share books on the Kindle as easily as you do your paperbacks, you can spread the word about a great eBook (which is also what you do when you lend someone your favorite print book). Thanks again for posting a review of Book of Mercy. Happy reading this summer.

It’s not formal, but we have a few shelves in a classroom with a cabinet where our 12 teachers can bring books they no longer want to keep at home or take something to read and bring it back, or not. I read quite a few of them. I also have a couple of co-workers with whom I share all my print books, though since I received my Kindle for Christmas last year I don’t buy as many of those. Looking at Amazon.com a lot more frequently now, I’m absolutely thrilled to have discovered some new authors, one of those being you. I’m waiting with bated breath to see what lovely, quirky characters you’ll come up with next! Thank you!

Thank god I saved you from “Le gauche” in time. If you end up in jail for a stick&run, swallow all remaining stickers and remain calm till I bail you out. Unless I get banned, in which case simply swallow stickers in order to resist temptation to plaster them all over judge’s face (who will then show neither you nor your Award-nominated BOOK OF MERCY any at all). You do know that you can forever after put the fact that BOOK OF MERCY was Finalist in MBAwards on cover and in book description, don’t you? Tell any NY agents or Houses which rejected it where they can stick that: on both cheeks, and not the ones on the face. LOL (both versions)

I taught Kindergarten for 4 years before University so have the sticker thing down pat: you put them either on your cheek – either side- or on your forehead, but never both. That would be tacky. However, it is permissable to also apply stickers to the forehead of absolutely everyone in your family (though you may have to do it while they’re sleeping), friends (ditto), and complete strangers in the grocery (hit&run, I mean, stick&run). Congrats! I didn’t even know Indie authors’ books could be considered for said things: usually publishers only are allowed to submit, so take it as the extreme honor it is. (And don’t forget my sticker, which I’ll proudly wear for you & BOOK OF MERCY) Love,

Martha, thank you for your kind words. I’m so happy you enjoyed Book of Mercy. Although I talked to many librarians while writing the book, it is great to have a librarian give my book a thumbs up. That means a lot to me. FYI, Book of Mercy is a finalist in the Midwest Book Awards.

I found your site after finishing Book of Mercy, one of my Kindle books. Thank you for those few hours of pleasure. As a retired school library media specialist who now teaches English to businessmen (and women) in France, I applaud your beautiful book and stance on censorship. As a North Carolina native, I felt so very at home with your descriptions of the Carolina environment. I simply loved the book and its characters, particularly Antigone, Sam, Ryder, Earthly, and Star. I’d be very happy to read more about them!

Thank you for sharing, Suzanne. I just had a nice thing happen to me recently. My novel Book of Mercy was chosen as a finalist in the Midwest Book Awards, and my first thought was: I’ve got to call Mom and tell her. I could even hear the conversation, hear her say, “Hey, Shoog, that’s wonderful.” When I think of what my mother would want for me, I think of what I want for my daughters: to just be happy. If I allow myself to be unhappy, I’m not really making my mom happy, wherever she is. Somewhere in heaven she is calling people sugar in her own inimitable way and trying to help them, I am sure.
